1001 Book Challenge + 13 reasons to read - Rebecca by Daphne De Maurier

  1. It's the centenary anniversary this week (this coming Sunday, to be precise) of Daphne De Maurier's birth, so it's as good a time as any!
  2. Discover possibly the world’s most famous first wife.
  3. Discover possibly one of the world's most popular estate names.
  4. Discover possibly one of. the world's most famous opening lines: "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again”.
  5. Here's a novelty - both a romance and a 'thriller' -combined- that I like.
  6. It has a fabulous, twisty plot and a climatic ending.
  7. It was made into a movie by Alfred Hitchcock. You've got to know then that the book it's based on is at least half-decent.
  8. Many people have seen the movie (it is actually my grandmother's favourite movie - there's some trivia!).
  9. Judith Anderson's portrayal of Mrs. Danvers was eerie enough to garner her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination.
  10. Du Maurier often said that most people who read Rebecca, "didn't get it." Her primary concern was the examination of power/lessness between husbands and wives.
  11. Study it if you must for clues to Du Maurier's rumoured real-life bisexuality....
  12. ....I for one will never look at valleys of rhododendron bushes the same ever again!
  13. Have you read it?

I've not read it I have to admit. There is a documentary on the BBC next week about Daphne De Maurier hosted by Rick Stein better known as a chef but he seems to be branching out into documentaries and be quite good at it.

I am ashamed to admit that I've never read it. I'll put it on my list right now. My TT is also posted.

There is also a contest named after her. The Mystery/Suspense romance chapter of RWA holds a the Daphne DuMaurier contest yearly where the best in romantic suspense is chosen. Many unpublished writers who win this award go on to become famous published authors.

I love Hitchcock and have seen the movie. I haven't read the book and should.

Great TT.

Yes, I've read it several times! Gotta say, when I was a teen this was my very favorite book/movie. Saw it again after I turned 35 and I was like, "Good grief. Fire that stupid maid and stop acting like a weenie!" Thanks for the great list and Happy TTing.

I read Rebecca when I was 12 (back in the Seventies). I had just come home from the beach and had a terrible sunburn, so bad I had to be kept home from school. I read all day--too young then to understand it all, but was riveted--and I've read it again and again over the years.

Did you see version of Rebecca with Dame Diana Rigg as Mrs. Danvers? She rocked it.

It's funny to me, as a kid, no one in my family read anything. As an adult I didn't really get into reading till my kids were born and then we home schooled them, so reading was an absolute must and then after all that, I ended up a writer. Go figure. lol

I haven't read Rebecca in well over a decade. Perhaps it's time to pick it up again. I do remember that I preferred Jamaica Inn to Rebecca at the time of reading - wonder if that opinion will stand the test of time?
